Our service helps international students (and their families) intending to come to the United States to obtain visas successfully. Our service also extends to assisting visitors and foreign citizens currently residing in the United States under a different visa to change to a J-1 visa. We welcome any questions from you about the J-1 visa.
The J-2 visa stems out of J-1 and is required by the family of an individual (international student) with a J-1 visa. The spouse and children of an individual with a J-1 visa are entitled to a J-2 visa regardless of their nationality. However, the children must be single and under the age of 20. Their other visa categories an immigrant could use to enter the United States, such as F-1, J-1, B-2, or H-1B visas.
The J-2 visa is dependent on the J-1, and candidates are expected to have obtained the DS-2019 form. The process involved includes the dependent individual completing and submitting the Request for Family DS-2019 form to the International Scholars Operations.

A J-2 visa holder is entitled to a job upon a request to the Employment Authority, a branch of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. However, certain requirements have to be met:
A J-2 member is subject to federal income taxes and social security if only he or she has an employment authorization document that was issued by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.
Other entitlement for a J-2 visa holder includes no restriction on the study, traveling outside the United States, and re-entry.
