Social Security Disability
Insurance Benefits (SSDI)

Supplemental Security Income
(SSI)

The United States Social Security Administration in its policy to provide for the less privileged makes provision by providing four basic programs to assist people who have disabilities and are incapable of getting income via employment. Although these programs have common similarities, each of the programs is aimed at assisting a particular sect. Each program has different requirements and conditions. An individual with disabilities who is unable to work and get enough income to support himself or herself may be eligible for the programs.

THE SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY INSURANCE BENEFITS (DIB)
This program is aimed at helping adults who had worked before the occurrence of his or her disability and had paid FICA taxes in a way contributing to the Social Security System. This program is often referred to as SSDI or DIB. Individuals who became disabled due to a physical and mental injury can benefit from this program.

SUPPLEMENTAL SECURITY INCOME
This program, which is also governed by the Social Security Administration, aims at providing benefits to individuals with no prior working records or FICA tax payment records. Supplemental Security Income is regarded as a “needs-based” and aims to provide benefits to people with few monies, no income at all, or assets.

BENEFITS FOR ADULT CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES

This program is an approach to cater to disabled individuals adults with a disability that had begun before reaching 22 years old. The SSDI shares the same disability conditions with this and must stop the individual from earning a “substantial” amount as income. Also, the adult child’s parent must be receiving SSDI benefits, or they are receiving retirement benefits, or such parents must be deceased and eligible for SSDI benefits.

WIDOW’S AND WIDOWERS WITH DISABILITIES BENEFITS
A disabled widow or widower over the age of 50 whose spouse or a former spouse had paid FICA taxes via employments or via Self-employment tax is eligible to benefit from the Social Security system if such spouse has a record with the social security system.

WHAT SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY BENEFITS AN INDIVIDUAL MAY RECEIVE?
Once an individual is approved for disability benefits via one of the Social Security Administration’s programs, the amount received by the individual may be different from that of another person. If you know what to expect from a program like this, it can help you plan for your future. Each year the amount disbursed is different, and some compensate for inflation. In most years, the amount is increased, but seldomly the case.

SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY INSURANCE BENEFITS
Most of the benefits are base on an individual’s income before he or she became disabled and for the period he or she had contributed to the Social Security system via FICA taxes or Self-employment. The calculation for the individual’s benefits is made based on this fact to arrive at the expected amount such individuals will benefit from. The Social Security Administration always send statements to the individual who has or contributes to the social security system. That statement reveals the estimates of an individual’s disability benefits. If you do not have your statement, it can be requested from the Social Security Administration by calling 1-800-772-1213.
This same principle is applicable for calculating the benefits for Disabled Adult Children but is calculated by using records of their parent contribution to the Social Security System. Likewise, the disbursed amount for Disabled Widow’s and Widower’s Benefits are calculated based on the spouse contribution Social Security system via FICA taxes or Self-employment.

SSI BENEFITS
If an individual is eligible for an SSI program benefits, the basic monthly payment is $698 as benefit such person or $1048 for qualified couples. Also, such an individual may receive additional support as payments from his or her State. There are other incomes available for such people, and these incomes may reduce the benefit obtained from SSI, and there is also a limit on other incomes. if an individual income or resources is higher than the limit, he or she may not receive the SSI’s program benefits.

These are the necessary criteria for individuals benefiting from the Social Security System.
